Dennis Angel is a Las Vegas based artist who specializes in original mixed media paintings. Involved in an ongoing process of collaboration with art history, many of his images are inspired by art works from around the world, ranging from Greek Hellenistic sculpture, High Renaissance painting and drawing to Asian religious icons. His primary goal as an artist is to reinvent and seize ownership of these works by using a complex layering process incorporating a myriad of techniques and processes.

Because of the directness of the drawing process his images are initiated with sketches that evolve slowly with the addition of a variety of materials and techniques. Beginning with a graphite drawing on a primed wood surface, gouache (an opaque watercolor) is then layered on to introduce color. Afterwards gold leaf, copper leaf and silver leaf are carefully gilded onto the surface. Handmade paper is torn and collaged on for additional textural embellishments. The formal challenge of integrating these various materials is accomplished by the continuous layering of the materials until a cohesive visual statement is realized. Through the manipulation of these materials objects and images from the past are presented to the viewer for reinterpretation and ultimately, visual pleasure.

His works have been featured in over 200 exhibitions and have been acquired nationally for private, pubic and corporate collections throughout the United States.

Dennis Angel’s studio is located in downtown Las Vegas. He maintains an active studio schedule and welcomes inquiries regarding new works and commissioned pieces.
